Rhode Island Marijuana Sales Reach $10.19 Million in January, 6% Increase From Previous Year

Rhode Island’s legal marijuana market generated $10.19 million in legal cannabis sales during January, marking an increase of over 6% from the $9.57 million sold in January 2025. Although this doesn’t top the record-setting $10.49 million sold in December, it comes close.

Of the January total, $9.09 million came from adult-use marijuana purchases, one of the highest monthly recreational figure ever recorded in the state. Medical marijuana sales accounted for the remaining $1.10 million, showing that while the medical program remains active, the adult-use market is clearly driving the bulk of revenue in the Ocean State.

A breakdown of sales by category shows that pre-packaged bud continues to dominate purchases, bringing in $4.23 million for the month. Raw pre-rolls followed at $1.96 million, with vape cartridges close behind at $1.73 million. Edibles accounted for $1.21 million in sales, while concentrates brought in $480,000. Infused pre-rolls generated $300,000, bud/flower sold by weight reached $180,000, tinctures totaled $60,000, and topicals and infused non-edibles made up smaller portions of the overall market.

Rhode Island legalized recreational marijuana in May 2022 when Governor Dan McKee signed the Rhode Island Cannabis Act into law. The state’s first adult-use marijuana stores opened in December 2022, marking the transition from a medical-only system to a dual market serving both patients and adults 21 and older. Under current law, adults may possess up to one ounce of marijuana in public and up to 10 ounces at home. Home cultivation is allowed for medical marijuana patients but remains prohibited for adult-use consumers.

January’s performance underscores how quickly Rhode Island’s marijuana market has matured into a consistent, multi-million-dollar industry.
