Minnesota’s legal marijuana market reached a new monthly high in May, with $28 million in combined adult-use and medical sales, according to new data from the state’s Office of Cannabis Management.
Adult-use sales accounted for $18 million of the total, while medical marijuana sales reached $10 million. The May total brings Minnesota’s 2026 marijuana sales to $119 million.
The new monthly record comes as Minnesota’s retail market continues to expand. The state now has 153 adult-use retailers, an increase of 14 from last month, along with 23 medical marijuana dispensaries, two more than the prior month. The state also reports 62 cultivation sites, 30 manufacturing sites, seven transporting sites and six testing sites.
Minnesota’s Cannabis Market Monitor shows $196.07 million in trailing 12-month marijuana sales, with 2,385,241 transactions during that same period. Monthly sales have climbed steadily in recent months, rising from $18 million in December to $19 million in January, $18 million in February, $22 million in March, $24 million in April and $28 million in May.
Flower remains the top-selling product category, accounting for $93 million in trailing 12-month sales. Concentrates were second at $61 million, followed by shake and trim at $23 million, edibles at $15 million and nonedible products at $3 million.
Adult-use flower remains notably more expensive than medical flower. The median retail price per gram over the trailing 12-month period was $14.52 for adult-use flower, compared with $10.15 for medical flower. In terms of volume, adult-use flower sales totaled 141,000 ounces, or 53% of the market, while medical flower accounted for 127,000 ounces, or 47%.
Minnesota legalized marijuana in 2023, with possession and use by adults 21 and older taking effect Aug. 1 of that year. The state’s first adult-use marijuana store, NativeCare, opened the same day on the Red Lake Reservation. Adults may possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana flower in public, up to 2 pounds at home, up to 8 grams of concentrate and edibles containing up to 800 milligrams of THC. Marijuana products are subject to a 15% gross receipts tax, in addition to the state’s 6.875% sales tax and any applicable local taxes.
