Illinois residents with sickle cell disease or polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome accompanied by chronic pain can now qualify for the state’s medical marijuana program.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that both conditions have been added to the Medical Cannabis Patient Program, increasing the state’s total number of qualifying conditions to 58.
The additions took effect immediately, allowing health care providers to begin certifying patients who meet the requirements.
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra approved the conditions after they were reviewed by the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board and department staff.
“Medical cannabis can provide relief for people living with certain debilitating conditions,” Vohra said. “IDPH reviews petitions carefully using expert opinion and the most up-to-date evidence to make decisions that best serve Illinois residents.”
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells and can cause recurring episodes of severe pain, along with anemia, fatigue, swelling, infections and organ damage. State health officials cited pain relief as a potential benefit of medical marijuana for patients with the condition.
The second newly approved condition, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome with chronic pain, was previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome. The disorder can affect hormone levels, metabolism and reproductive health and can be accompanied by persistent pain.
Illinois allows residents to petition the Department of Public Health to add medical conditions to the program. Those requests are reviewed using available medical research and scientific evidence, with recommendations also considered from the state’s Medical Cannabis Advisory Board.
Vohra said the department plans to work with medical providers to ensure patients with the newly approved conditions have appropriate access to the program.
With the latest additions, Illinois now recognizes 58 debilitating conditions for medical marijuana eligibility.
