Massachusetts Marijuana Sales Top $1.11 Billion in 2026, All-Time Total Reaches $11.5 Billion

Licensed cannabis stores in Massachusetts have generated more than $1.11 billion in combined adult-use and medical marijuana sales through August 9, according to new data released today by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.

Adult-use marijuana sales reached $1.026 billion between January 1 and August 9, while medical marijuana sales totaled approximately $87.9 million, bringing combined sales for the year to $1.114 billion. The Commission’s sales datasets were last updated August 14 and currently include transactions through August 9.

Adult-use sales continue to account for the vast majority of the state’s marijuana market. Through August 9, recreational sales were about 3.2% higher than during the same period in 2025, when they totaled approximately $994.4 million. Medical sales, meanwhile, were down about 9.2% from the roughly $96.8 million reported during the comparable period last year.

Taken together, adult-use and medical sales are up approximately 2.1% from the $1.091 billion generated during the same period in 2025.

July was another strong month for the market, with approximately $149.3 million in adult-use sales and $12.2 million in medical sales, for a combined total of about $161.5 million. During the first nine days of August, sales added another $46.3 million, including $42.8 million from the adult-use market and $3.5 million from medical patients.

The latest figures push cumulative sales recorded in the Commission’s current datasets to approximately $11.52 billion. That includes $9.88 billion in adult-use sales and $1.64 billion in medical sales dating back to November 2018. The state’s adult-use market surpassed $9 billion in gross sales in February.

Massachusetts launched licensed adult-use marijuana sales in November 2018. The Commission notes that its Open Data figures are self-reported by licensed businesses and adjusted for voided transactions.

Adult-use marijuana purchases are subject to a 6.25% state sales tax and a 10.75% state excise tax, with municipalities allowed to impose an additional local tax of up to 3%. Medical marijuana sales are not subject to those taxes.
