Alabama’s Third Medical Marijuana Dispensary Opens in Athens as Program Expands

Alabama’s third medical marijuana dispensary opened September 14 in Athens, continuing the gradual expansion of the state’s newly operational medical marijuana program.

The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission lists BamaBloom, located at 809 U.S. Highway 72 W., Suites A&B, as opening Monday. The dispensary is operated by GP6 Wellness LLC and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Athens location follows the opening of Alabama’s first medical marijuana dispensary, Callie’s Apothecary in Montgomery, on June 4. A second Callie’s Apothecary location opened in Talladega on August 28.

When announcing the Talladega opening last month, the commission said BamaBloom planned to open locations in both Athens and Birmingham in September, with a third location planned for Etowah County. Callie’s Apothecary has also announced plans for a Bessemer location.

Only registered patients and caregivers with a valid Alabama medical marijuana card are permitted to enter dispensaries. Patients must be Alabama residents and receive a recommendation from a physician certified to recommend medical marijuana.

Alabama’s program allows products including tablets, capsules, tinctures, lozenges, certain gelatinous products, topical gels and oils, suppositories, transdermal patches and liquids or oils used in an inhaler. Raw marijuana flower and products intended to be smoked or vaped are prohibited.

The state’s medical marijuana program was created through the Darren Wesley “Ato” Hall Compassion Act in 2021, but legal disputes and licensing delays kept retail sales from beginning until June 2026.

Based on licenses issued so far, the commission says dispensing locations are expected in Athens, Attalla, Bessemer, Birmingham, Daphne, Mobile, Montgomery, Oxford and Talladega. Additional locations could eventually be added as licensing proceedings continue.
