Hawaii Has Registered Nearly 3,800 Out-of-State Medical Marijuana Patients So Far in 2026, Up 15% From 2025

Hawaii registered nearly 3,800 out-of-state medical marijuana patients during the first eight months of 2026, an increase of roughly 15% compared with the same period last year.

According to the Hawaii Department of Health’s August 2026 Medical Cannabis Registry Program report, 3,792 out-of-state patients were registered between January 1 and August 31.

That is 487 more than the 3,305 reported during the same eight-month period in 2025, representing an increase of about 14.7%.

As of August 31, Hawaii had 823 currently registered out-of-state patients from 38 states, territories and the District of Columbia. Another 298 visitors had approved registrations scheduled to become active after the end of August.

A year earlier, 757 out-of-state patients from 30 states, territories and the District of Columbia were registered, while 281 approved registrations were awaiting activation.

Florida was the most common home state among visiting patients in August, accounting for 135 registrations, or 16.4% of the total. Arizona ranked second with 82 patients, followed by California with 57. In August 2025, Florida and Arizona also ranked first and second, while Utah was third.

Severe pain was the most commonly certified condition among current out-of-state patients, reported by 531 people. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was second with 271, followed by severe nausea with 121.

The state approved 476 out-of-state applications in August alone, up about 20.5% from the 395 approved in August 2025.

Hawaii allows qualifying visitors who hold a valid medical marijuana registration from another U.S. state or territory to apply for a temporary Hawaii registration. Once approved, the digital 329 card is valid for up to 60 days and may be renewed once during the calendar year for another 60 days.

Hawaii also reported 29,315 valid in-state medical marijuana patients as of August 31, compared with 29,258 at the same point last year.
