The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) has released sales data for the state’s legal marijuana industry for the first time since the end of June.
After a nearly four-month hiatus, the CCC has published marijuana sales data for July, August, September, and the first 13 days of October. Prior to this release, the last data was provided on June 30.
According to the CCC, a total of $536.6 million in legal marijuana was sold between July 1 and October 13. Approximately 90% of these sales — $484.7 million — came from recreational purchases, while medical marijuana patients accounted for $51.9 million during the same period.

As of October 13, the price of cannabis is at its lowest point in state history, averaging $4.85 per gram and $137.61 per ounce.
According to the CCC, there are now 709 active marijuana strains available throughout the state, the most in state history.
Marijuana was legalized in Massachusetts in 2016, with the law allowing those 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants for personal use. The first licensed marijuana store opened in 2018.
Recreational marijuana purchases are subject to a 10.75% excise tax, in addition to the standard statewide sales tax of 6.25%, whereas medical marijuana sales are exempt from both taxes. Tax revenue from marijuana sales is divided between the Marijuana Regulation Fund, local municipalities, and the state’s General Fund.
