Massachusetts Marijuana Sales Hit $154 Million in December, Bringing 2024 Total to $1.65 Billion

December marijuana sales in Massachusetts topped $154 million.

Data released today by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) shows that there was $140.2 million worth of recreational marijuana sold in December. When combined with the $14.5 million in medical marijuana sold during the same month, there was $154.7 million in total marijuana sales.

December’s sales total brings the total for 2024 to $1.65 billion. The all-time total since 2018 is now $7.20 billion.

In December, the average cost of marijuana again reached a new all-time low, dropping to an average of $4.44 per gram and $125 per ounce.

According to the CCC, there are now 737 active marijuana strains available throughout the state.

Massachusetts legalized marijuana in 2016, allowing adults 21 and older to possess up to one ounce and cultivate up to six plants for personal use. The state’s first licensed marijuana store opened in November 2018.

Recreational marijuana purchases are taxed at a 10.75% excise rate, along with the standard 6.25% statewide sales tax, while medical marijuana sales remain tax-exempt. Total marijuana sales of $7 billion have generated over $1 billion in tax revenue.

Revenue from marijuana taxes is distributed among the Marijuana Regulation Fund, local municipalities, and the state’s General Fund.
