In Massachusetts, adult-use cannabis businesses set a gross sales record over the three-day Patriots’ Day weekend, which coincided with 4/20 this year.
Gross sales figures collected by the Cannabis Control Commission (Commission) show that Marijuana Establishments in Massachusetts earned nearly $15 million over the Patriots’ Day long weekend, which included the annual 4/20 cannabis holiday coinciding with Easter.
Over Patriots’ Day weekend in 2025, the 397 Marijuana Retailers, 10 Delivery Couriers, 18 Delivery Operators, and two Microbusinesses with Delivery Endorsements that have commenced operations statewide grossed $14.62 million between April 19 and 21, according to Metrc, the state’s seed-to-sale tracking system.
Compared to other Patriots’ Day weekends, the 2025 long weekend was a gross sales high point for retailers. Over Patriots’ Day weekend in 2024, which spanned April 13 to 15, gross sales reached $12.99 million, and $12.24 million over the weekend in 2023.
The combined three-day 4/20 period (April 19, 20, 21) was the third-highest grossing of any year since retail stores reopened after the pandemic:
2024 — $18.45 million
2023 — $16.15 million
2025 — $14.62 million
2022 — $13.60 million
2021 — $10.48 million
April 19 was the highest-grossing day of the 2025 weekend at $6.30 million, which is on par with the same date in 2024. On April 21, the day of the 129th Boston Marathon, retailers saw similar sales as the previous year at $3.47 million compared to $3.50 million in 2024, according to Metrc data. Marijuana Establishments grossed $4.87 million on 4/20 alone in 2025.
“The Commission recognizes the importance of the 4/20 cannabis holiday for our retailers and delivery businesses,” Acting Chair Bruce Stebbins said. “This year was unique with 4/20 falling on Easter and being part of a longer Patriots’ Day holiday weekend. Collectively, we were happy to see a new gross sales record for the Patriots’ Day holiday weekend and congratulate our licensees for making the most out of the sales opportunities.”
Over the first three months of 2025, gross sales in Massachusetts reached $392.6 million, the same as the first three months in 2024.
Marijuana Establishments set a single-day gross sales record in 2024 when 4/20 fell on a Saturday. Previous 4/20 holidays in 2021, 2022, and 2023 fell on weekdays. Marijuana Establishments were closed in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s 4/20 holiday follows important regulatory updates made in late 2024 by the Commission, and as Commissioners are working to finalize new social consumption license types to further expand the cannabis industry.
The Commission makes sales data available on its Open Data Platform, allowing the public to view economic data like sales figures for medical marijuana treatment centers, sales by delivery businesses, and the average cost of cannabis flower over time. New in 2025, the platform has been updated to include county-level data on cannabis sales.
The Massachusetts adult-use cannabis industry has grossed more than $7.7 billion since 2018, generating more than $1.4 billion in state and local tax revenue in the process. Adult-use tax revenue supports a variety of important programs in the state, including addiction recovery services, community college programming, and re-entry grants.
