The legal sale of marijuana in Illinois amounted to roughly $170 million in April, according to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
The sales total, specifically $169.6 million, includes dried marijuana flower and various products like concentrates, edibles, and topicals.
Of this amount, $144.5 million was purchased by recreational consumers, while medical marijuana patients accounted for $25.1 million. Although April’s total represents a slight decrease from March’s $174 million, it shows an increase compared to February’s $160 million and January’s $158 million. The year-to-date marijuana sales in Illinois now approximate $660 million.
In April, the average price per gram of recreational marijuana was $9.16, setting a new record low. Similarly, the average cost per gram of marijuana concentrates also reached a record low of $58. Out of the $144 million in recreational marijuana sales, Illinois residents contributed $111.5 million, while out-of-state residents purchased $33 million.
Marijuana legalization in Illinois occurred in 2019, with the first store opening the following year. The law permits residents aged 21 and older to purchase up to 30 grams of dried marijuana, five grams of marijuana concentrates, and up to 500 milligrams of THC in marijuana-infused products. Non-residents can possess up to 15 grams of dried marijuana, 2.5 grams of concentrates, and edibles with up to 250 milligrams of THC.
Earlier this month Illinois’ sixth marijuana store voted to unionize.
