Spain imported nearly as much marijuana during the first half of 2026 as it did during all of 2025, according to newly disclosed data from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS).
Spain recorded 25,730 kilograms of cannabis imports from January through June, compared with 26,883 kilograms during the entirety of 2025.
If the first-half pace continues, imports would exceed 51,000 kilograms for the year, nearly double the 2025 total and above the 45,099 kilograms recorded in 2024.
The data also show that Spain imported more marijuana than it exported during the first six months of 2026.
Exports totaled 18,305 kilograms during the period, compared with 30,589 kilograms during all of 2025. The resulting difference marked a reversal from 2025, when Spain exported roughly 3,700 kilograms more than it imported.
Portugal alone accounted for approximately 11,386 kilograms, or over 40%, of Spain’s first-half imports.
Spain has developed into a significant processing and production center for Europe’s medical marijuana industry while its own domestic patient program remains comparatively limited.
The country established a framework for standardized marijuana preparations under Royal Decree 903/2025, allowing qualifying products to be prescribed by specialist physicians and prepared and dispensed through hospital pharmacy services.
AEMPS maintains oversight of marijuana cultivation, production, imports and exports for medical and scientific purposes. Spanish law generally treats cannabis and cannabis resin as controlled narcotics, with authorized activities restricted to medical, scientific, industrial and other specifically permitted purposes.
