Throughout August Illinois marijuana stores sold $139.2 million worth of product, a 7.6% increase over the year prior.
The sales are similar to, but slighter lower than the $140 million sold in July (a monthly record), and they’re just shy of $4 million more than the sales for June.
$104.9 million of the marijuana and marijuana products sold came from those living in Illinois, with the remaining $34.3 million purchased by out-of-state residents.
“Usable Marijuana”, aka dried flower, represented the most purchased category at $81.2 million. In second place was marijuana extracts meant for inhalation (wax, shatter, etc.) at $54.3 million, followed by solid marijuana infused edibles at $21.8 million.
The average price per gram of marijuana in August was $9.79, all-time low. The average price per gram of marijuana extracts also reached an all-time low of $68.84. Both numbers are still considerable higher than many other legal marijuana states. For example, the average price per gram of dried marijuana in Oregon is less than $4 with the average for concentrates being $16. In Massachusetts the average price per gram of dried marijuana is around $6, and in Maine it’s $7.
In Illinois marijuana was legalized for those 21 and older in 2019, with the first marijuana store opening the following year. The possession limit for residents is 30 grams of cannabis flower, five grams of cannabis concentrate and no more than 500 milligrams of THC contained in a cannabis-infused product. The possession limit for non-Illinois residents is 15 grams of cannabis flower, 2.5 grams of cannabis no more than 250 milligrams of THC contained in a cannabis-infused products.
According to a recent report, Illinois has the third largest cannabis market in the country, but it also has some of the highest prices.
