There was over $1.1 billion in legal marijuana sold in the final quarter of 2023 in California, bringing the yearly total to $4.4 billion.
According to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, there was $1,050,401,980 in marijuana sold legally in Q4, 2023. This brings the total for 2023 to $4,399,048,681.
The over $4 billion in marijuana sales in 2023 resulted in $1,082,452,368 in tax revenue for the state. $461,308,257 of this came from the state’s sales tax, and $621,144,111 coming from the state’s marijuana excise tax.
The top quarter for marijuana sales in 2023 was Q2, with $1.13 million in marijuana sold resulting in $286,228,739 in tax revenue.
Marijuana sales data includes dried marijuana flower, shake and prerolls, as well as a variety of marijuana products including concentrates, edibles and topicals.
California legalized marijuana in 2016, four years after Colorado and Washington became the first states to do so. The law allows those 21 and older to purchase, possess and use marijuana, while also allowing them to grow marijuana for personal use at a private residence. Marijuana can be legally purchased from any licensed marijuana retail outlet.
According to government-funded polling data commissioned by the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), 62% of adults in the state believe the legalization of marijuana has benefited the community, while 86% of marijuana consumers believe it’s important to purchase marijuana from legal sources.
