Oregon Marijuana Sales Jump to $82 Million in March

Oregon marijuana sales increased considerably in March compared to January and February.

Data released by the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission shows that there was $82,352,507 worth of legal marijuana sold in March. This is a notable increase over the $75.6 million sold in January and the $75.9 million sold in February.

The yearly total for marijuana sales is now $234 million. The total since the start of recreational marijuana sales in late 2016 is $6.459 billion, with $950 million coming in 2023. The nearly $6.5 billion in sales has garnered over $1.1 billion in tax revenue for the state.

The average price per gram of dried marijuana in March increased slightly, from $3.92 to $3.96. For the fourth straight month the average price of marijuana concentrates remained $16 per gram. When the first retail outlet opened in 2016, the average cost per gram of marijuana was $10.50, and the average cost per gram of marijuana concentrates was $45.

Based on Oregon’s 17% marijuana excise tax, the state collected about $14 million in taxes from marijuana sales in March, and around $40 million so far in 2024.

Oregon voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2014, making them the third state to do so following Colorado and Washington in 2012. The law allows those 21 and older to possess up to two ounces of marijuana in public and up to eight ounces at home, as well as one ounce of marijuana extracts, 16 ounces of marijuana-infused solids, and 72 ounces of marijuana-infused liquids. Licensed marijuana retail outlets are authorized to sell marijuana to anyone 21 and older.
