A new study published by the journal Psychological Research challenges long-held assumptions about chronic marijuana users and impulsive behavior, suggesting that habitual cannabis use may not significantly impair decision-making.
Researchers from the University of Texas and Washington State University compared chronic cannabis users to non-users in a series of cognitive and physical tasks. In one experiment, participants walked down a hallway and retrieved two cups of water—one closer and one farther from their starting position—without spilling. Choosing the far cup first indicated a more proactive and efficient approach, while selecting the near cup first reflected reactive behavior, often associated with “precrastination.”
In results that researchers described as “surprising”, chronic cannabis users were just as likely as non-users to opt for the more efficient strategy, showing no significant difference between the groups. In fact, many users chose the far cup first, contradicting expectations that they would act more impulsively. Their self-reported reasoning aligned with proactive planning, rather than reactive impulse.
The study also used a separate cognitive task—the AX-Continuous Performance Task—to evaluate control strategies. Both user groups demonstrated proactive control, even though chronic users scored lower on short-term and working memory measures.
These findings run counter to common narratives that chronic marijuana use inherently leads to poor impulse control and diminished cognitive effort. Researchers suggest that when tasks involve low memory demands and clear consequences, marijuana users may be just as capable of efficient, goal-oriented decision-making as non-users.
