Smart & Safe Florida Raises $25.8 Million for Campaign to Legalize Cannabis in 2026

Smart & Safe Florida has raised $25.8 million in its campaign to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida in 2026, with the overwhelming majority of funding continuing to come from one of the nation’s largest marijuana companies.

According to the latest data from the Florida Division of Elections, the political committee has raised $25,817,024.60.  Around 99% of that total comes from Trulieve, which operates 162 medical marijuana dispensaries in the state, and 233 nationwide. Trulieve’s contributions add up to $25,812,524.60, including $1.2 million in July and $972,904 in August.

The rest of the committee’s money has come from individual donors. In total, 53 contributions have been reported.

The funding supports Smart & Safe Florida’s push to place a marijuana legalization initiative on the November 2026 ballot. So far, the group has submitted 612,576 valid signatures—about 69% of the 880,062 required to qualify, although no update has been provided since July.

If approved, the initiative would allow individuals 21 and older to legally purchase and possess up to two ounces of marijuana. Public consumption would remain prohibited, and sales would be handled at first through licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers, with additional licenses issued at a later date.

A similar legalization measure in 2024 secured 56% support, falling short of the 60% supermajority needed for passage.
