Oklahoma Senate Approves Four Marijuana-Focused Studies on Rescheduling, Testing and Abandoned Grows

The Oklahoma Senate has approved four marijuana-focused interim studies ahead of the 2027 legislative session, covering federal marijuana rescheduling, pesticide testing and abandoned cultivation facilities.

All four studies have been assigned to the Senate Business and Insurance Committee, according to the Senate’s list of approved 2026 interim studies.

Interim Study 2026-50, requested by Senator Carri Hicks, is titled “Preparing Oklahoma for Federal Marijuana Rescheduling.” The study could examine how Oklahoma should respond if marijuana is moved from Schedule I to Schedule III under federal law and what changes may be necessary for the state’s medical marijuana industry.

Hicks also requested Interim Study 2026-55, titled “Patient Safety in Oklahoma Medical Marijuana: Pesticide Testing and Contaminant Standards Review.” The study will examine testing and contaminant standards within Oklahoma’s medical marijuana program.

Two additional studies will focus on abandoned marijuana cultivation operations.

Interim Study 2026-45, requested by Senator Warren Hamilton and Representative Cynthia Roe, is titled “Impacts of Abandoned Marijuana Grows.”

Interim Study 2026-59, requested by Senator Tom J. Jech, will evaluate the state’s management of abandoned medical marijuana commercial grow operations.

The Oklahoma Senate approved the studies recently as part of its 2026 interim study process. Senate President Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton said the studies are intended to give lawmakers an opportunity to examine issues in greater depth before the next legislative session.

Committee chairs decide which approved studies are ultimately scheduled for hearings. As of September 16, hearing dates have not been posted for any of the four marijuana-related studies.

All Senate interim studies must be completed by October 30. Hearings that are scheduled will be open to the public and livestreamed through the Oklahoma Senate website.
