Montana marijuana retailers generated more than $28 million in sales during September, bringing the state’s total for the first nine months of 2026 to $250 million and pushing all-time sales above $1.52 billion.
According to newly updated figures from the Montana Department of Revenue, September marijuana sales totaled $28,055,429, including $25,577,747 in recreational marijuana purchases and $2,477,682 in medical marijuana sales.
The September total represents a 3.9% decrease from August, when sales reached $29,200,209. However, sales were up approximately 0.8% compared with September 2025, when retailers generated $27,829,304.
Through the first nine months of 2026, combined recreational and medical marijuana sales reached approximately $249.24 million. That’s an increase of $4.85 million, or about 2%, compared with the $244.39 million recorded during the same period in 2025.
The growth continues to be driven by recreational marijuana purchases. Adult-use sales totaled approximately $225.1 million from January through September, compared with $215.75 million during the first nine months of 2025, an increase of 4.3%.
Medical marijuana sales have continued moving in the opposite direction. Medical purchases totaled approximately $24.14 million through September, down 15.7% from the $28.64 million reported during the same period last year.
In September alone, recreational marijuana accounted for approximately 91% of all legal marijuana sales in Montana.
Since recreational marijuana sales began in January 2022, Montana has recorded $1,523,162,119 in combined sales. That includes $1,260,192,343 in recreational purchases and $262,969,775 in medical marijuana sales.
The Department of Revenue estimates that marijuana sales have generated approximately $262.56 million in state marijuana taxes since January 2022, including $252.04 million associated with recreational purchases and $10.52 million from medical marijuana.
Montana voters legalized recreational marijuana in November 2020, with licensed adult-use sales beginning January 1, 2022.
Recreational marijuana purchases are subject to a 20% state tax, while medical marijuana is taxed at 4%. Counties can also impose an additional local marijuana tax of up to 3%.
