Support for legal marijuana continues to grow in New Hampshire, according to a new Granite State Poll released by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.
The poll found that 70% of New Hampshire residents strongly or somewhat support legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. Support has increased slightly since June 2024, when it stood at 65%, and remains well above the levels recorded during the mid-2010s. Of those polled, 49% said they strongly support legalization, while 20% said they somewhat support it.
Support for legalization spans political lines, with 84% of Democrats, 72% of Independents, and 55% of Republicans saying they back allowing adults 21 and older to legally possess marijuana. Opposition to legalization remains relatively low, with 21% somewhat or strongly opposed, 9% neutral or having no opinion, and less than 1% unsure.
The New Hampshire Legislature is once again considering legislation to legalize marijuana possession for adults, a bill that, unlike previous efforts, would simply make possession and use legal without establishing a regulated sales system. The House has already approved such a measure, with the Senate expected to consider it soon (despite being rejected by a Senate committee).
The strong public support could play an important role in shaping the outcome of the legislation as debate continues in Concord.
